FAQ's
We're brand new and just in alpha phase so there can't be any Frequently Asked Questions because no one has been around to ask questions frequently enough :-) but we'll try to come up with some you might be thinking.
So what's the deal?
It's pretty simple really. You sign up with us, hook up your Twitter account (through OAuth) and start getting your @mentions to your mobile device.
What's the charge?
Zero, nada, nothing (at least on our side). You'll have to pay your mobile service provider for txt messages of course (if you're getting them for free, let us know how to get that kind of a deal). For now (and the recent future) we don't see charging for anything, so go nuts. Of course, nothing is permanent. If we ever *did* decide to charge though, we'll let everyone know long before.
Well what if I want to throw you a couple of duckets?
If you're feeling the need to send us some love, there's a donate button at the bottom of every page. You'll help us with development and hosting costs and get some pretty kick ass Karma to boot. Isn't that sweet?
What are some of the features?
Well other than getting your replies to your mobile device, there a few extra features such as:
- a blackout period can be set so that you don't get mentions at certain times of the day like, say, when you're asleep. Don't worry though, at the ending time you designate, you'll get any mentions that are in the queue.
- a whitelist or blacklist can be set so that you can (optionally) only get your mentions for people you specify (whitelist) or never get mentions from people you specify (blacklist).
- a feature we're working on is to be able to reply from your device without opening a Twitter client. This is key for non-smart phones as well since those don't have twitter clients.
- we're also working on a feature that will let you get retweet's sent. Currently, if a user uses Twitters (fairly new) retweet feature, it's technically not a "reply" or a "mention". So you wouldn't get those. With MyMentions, you'll be able to (optionally) get those retweets sent to you as well.
What about Feed services? Can't I just get them through those?
Services that use RSS to get your replies are great, but our service has a few more features you can't get with those. The main one being getting mentions from people with protected updates. If you're following someone who has their updates hidden from the public, those don't show up in RSS and therefore you won't get that mention. We also have the option for you to filter when you get your replies and even filter who you get your replies from.
How do you grab my mentions from protected users then?
When you connect your Twitter account to your MyMentions account, it's like you're logging in through Twitter when we check for your mentions or replies. This way, we're able to deliver your mentions and replies from users who protect their updates from the public.
Wait, you're logging me in to Twitter? Do I have to give you my Twitter username and password?
Nope. Not at all. Twitter uses an authentication system called OAuth to allow third party services to work with their system. OAuth is a secure way to tell Twitter that you allow us to check your account. This way, your Twitter password stays on Twitter. Read more about OAuth on Wikipedia here.
But I've given my username/password to other Twitter services
Giving your username and password to other services to access your Twitter account is called "basic authentication" which Twitter has stated they will turn off sometime in the summer of 2010.
This section is too short, can I help you populate it?
Sure, just send us a question at info@mymentions.com or hit us up on our Twitter at @MyMentionscom (another way to get some good karma). We'll answer your question as best we can, and if we get it a few times then we'll post that here.
